Backpack
I use a NorthFace mountain backpack, a 70L monster, that doesn't feel too heavy on the back and shoulders. It's in rip stop and it accompanied me in my Round the World in 2002. I will bring along a packable duffle bag to be used as extra bag and eventual laudry bag. It's very though and surprisingly big. I won't fill the backpack up though as the space in the train is limited about 0.50*0.50*1.5 meters and i'ts shared.Feast your travel eyes on the> Gear Gallery

Travel guide
The Lonely Planet Trans-Siberian Railway, it's compact, not too heavy and more than enough.

Maps
The travel guide has plenty of them, but If I can't go to Stanford's in London before setting off with the journey, I prefer to buy them once in Moscow.Feast your travel eyes on the> Gear Gallery

Clothing
I will be packing 4 undie shorts + a thermal one,
3 undie t-shirts plus a thermal one (because I will go no stop from Moscow to Ulaan Baatar),
5 pairs of socks plus a pair of flight socks and another of thick socks,
3 outherwear t-shirts,
two pair of trousers of different thickness (both with detachable lower legs),
a tracksuit to blend in as adviced on the guide,
a compact rain jacket,
a compressible down jacket,
a hooded zipped sweather,
a long sleeved t-shirt,
a fleece sweather,
the minuscule silk pijama,
a beanie. -
Shoes
A pair of waterproof gore-tex hiking shoes, and the universal flip flops will be enough. -
Socializers
To break the ice with my cabin mate(s) I will bring phrase books, photos of my family and pocket dictionaries. -
