Ultima tappa del mio peregrinare in Sud Africa, ed è stata anche la prima. Curiosamente, è la terza volta che vado a Jo’Burg, ma non è che l’ho girata come vorrei. Sarà per la prossima volta.

L’autista Charlie dice che a luglio non è riuscito ad andare a lavorare a causa della nevicata che ha bloccato tutto a Johannesburg e dintorni. Non nevicava da 26 anni.

La signora Maria Teresa, mamma di Barbara Castellan, grazie alla quale ho potuto documentare Tiffindell, mi racconta come si vive dietro muri e fili elettrici o spinati. Non è facile, ma ormai in Italia non si trova più e preferisce il Sud Africa. Una simpatica e iperattiva nonnetta, con una forza sovrumana e tante cose da raccontare. Una vita avventurosa e piena di eventi.

Monte Casino è un casino, centro commerciale e di ristorazione, interamente costruito a immagine e somiglianza di un centro storico italiano, come Venus Front a Tokyo Odaiba. Chissà quanti altre aberrazioni del genere esistono in giro per il mondo. Come per Odaiba comunque, ero felicissimo di cotanta ammirazione per il bel paese, che si conferma come modello di stile e di vita a livello planetario.

Arrivederci al Sud Africa, terra vecchissima, abitata da animali umani e non, con un passato che risale a altre epoche, migliaia di anni di storia, sofferenza, lotte per la sopravvivenza che ancora caratterizzano il lowveld e l’highveld, come lo chiamarono i voortrekkers boeri. I nomi dei posti in afrikaans, come Sterkfontein o Pretoria, o Nielspruit o Kaapstad, come quelli in inglese, stanno gradualmente per essere rimpiazzati o affiancati da nomi in lingue autoctone, come lo Zulu, lo Xhosa, il Bantu…si cambia di nuovo, alla fine della tempesta c’è l’arcobaleno, la rainbow nation è sotti gli occhi di tutti.

Last leg of my roaming in Southern Africa, third time I visited this city, without really any sightseeing of sorts.

Just Monte Casino, a Casino shaped like an italian centro storico, which makes me proud wherever it is. Looks like Venus Front mall, in Odaiba, Tokyo, Japan. Italian style admired and copied all over the planet.

Big thanks to the Castellan family, Barbara and his mom Maria Teresa, the lively granny driving me around in the video. She explains in an impeccable italian with a veneto accent, how life became much harder now, with the crime rate South Africa is experiencing. Nonetheless, she’ll never leave Africa, like her daughter Barbara, who made my report about Tiffindell possible.

Best of luck to the rainbow nation, may it stay peaceful, may all the huge problems be resolved in peace, as an example for the world, may Ubuntu become the driving force of South Africa.
