The Amtrak service is much better than the Greyhound buses. It’s considerably faster and more comfortable, even cheaper. The 32 hours train ride from Sacramento California, to Denver Colorado, on board the “California Zephir” was memorable. Outside the window, the rugged western scenery of Nevada Utah and Colorado. Beautiful red rock mountains dusted with snow, that increased in depth as we climbed the canyons and the mesas. Romantic train ride. Yes, you can say that.
It was beautiful. During the day the train is generally slow, and it speeds up at night to make up time. The seats are large, most of them have electric plugs, and they recline to offer more comfort at night.
The train could be faster though, and have less stops, if only there was an express service. It stopped in every major town between Sacramento and Denver. We arrived one hour late because of the large number of freight trains on the rails. They said it is because of the ice storm in the mid-west. There are no assigned seats, so if you have a mate taking you to the station, have him or her board the train for you while you sort out the luggage, to choose a wired seat. No plug, no fun. And don’t bother checking the luggage in, you can leave it in the dowstairs compartment. They wouldn’t handle my snowboard bag, because it’s above 55 lbs. It was 50 lbs, just five above!

Anyway, the Amtrak trains are definitely one of the best ways to savor the landscape and travel. I recommend taking a train in the US, it’s magnificent!

Il servizio dell’Amtrak è molto meglio di quello della Greyhound. E’ più veloce e più confortevole, anche meno caro. Le 32 spese a bordo del “California Zephir” da Sacramento a Denver in Colorado, sono state memorabili. Fuori dal finestrino scorreva il paesaggio magnifico del “west” americano, mentre attraversavamo Nevada, Utah e Colorado. Stupende montagne rosse spolverate di neve, la coltre che si faceva via via più spessa mentre il treno si arrampicava su per i canyons e le mesas. Decisamente romantico. Si può fare questa affermazione senza cadere nella retorica.
E’ stato bellissimo. Durante il giorno il treno è generalmente più lento, e di notte accelera per recuperare tempo. I posti a sedere sono larghi e di notte è possibile reclinarli per dormire. La maggior parte dei posti ha anche due prese elettriche.
Il treno potrebbe andare più veloce comunque, con meno fermate ed un servizio espresso. Lo “Zephir” s’è fermato in ogni città degna di questo nome tra Sacramento e Denver. Alla fine abbiamo accumulato un’ora di ritardo a causa dei numerosi treni merci sui binari. Dicono a causa della tempesta nel mid-west.
Non ci sono posti assegnati, come per le linee aeree a basso costo, quindi è consigliabile andare alla stazione con un amico, e farlo salire a occupare un posto con una presa elettrica, mentre tu ti occupi di caricare e sistemare i bagagli. Senza presa elettrica c’è poco da fare per vincere la noia notturna.
Ah, e non serve fare il check in dei bagagli, lo scomparto al piano di sotto della carrozza è enorme, e garantisce accesso diretto al proprio bagaglio in ogni momento. Io non lo sapevo, ed mi hanno accettato una sola valigia all’atto del check in, perchè la sacca dello snowboard pesava 55 libbre, contro un limite di 50.

Ad ogni modo, i treni Amtrak sono uno dei modi migliori per assaporare i panorami magnifici degli Stati Uniti. Prendete un treno negli USA, non ve ne pentirete!
