E’ tutta una questione di accenti in realtà…

Roberto dei Rad Moves mi ha mandato un video sul mio Myspace, su un’uscita a Montecristo, massiccio del Gran Sasso, a metà novembre. M’è venuto il groppo in gola. A Campo Imperatore, l’impianto più famoso del centro Italia, ho mosso i primi impacciatissimi passi sullo snowboard. Ero vestito in maniera oscena: moncler, tuta da sci con sopra pantaloni workwear Carhartt, guantoni di Mickey Mouse souvenir di Disneyland, cappellone ricamato dall’enorme Mamma Lisa e mascherina da sci di mio Padre. Era fine 1995. Molta neve è caduta da quel giorno, molte piste discese con gli amici o la musica come compagnia. The Snow Must Go On, the Rad Moves Club must go on either!

Roberto dei Rad Moves sent me this video on my Myspace. It’s a snowboard day in mid november this year. Montecristo il the location, Gran Sasso massif in central Italy. On this very mountain, I started snowboarding in 1995. I was dressed like a clown, Mickey Mouse gloves, Carhartt workwear pants and a fashionable french down jacket…tons of snow fell since then, countless riding days spent with friends or music in my ears. The Snow Must Go On, the Rad Moves Club must go on either!

That tan bald guy fumbling with a board and its bindings (I was so excited that I mounted them switch…and I ride regular…) next to an handsomly cute little boy, it’s me. Eren Hughes is the child, and he was trying to explain me how to assemble the board. He’s the 14 months old fruit of Mine and Ted Hughes love. He already understand 3 languages, and he was picking up some Italian from me (-:D.

Right, the board. Thanks to the fundamental help of Claudio Cuccu of Rome Snowboards Italy, and the benevolence of Ryan Runke, of ROME SNOWBOARDS, I received an “Anthem” board, a pair of “Targa”
bindings and a pair of “Bodega” boots. I found it waiting for me in Ted’s garage in Burbank California, a couple of blocks away from Disney and Warner bros studios, in Hollywood Media District.

I’m writing this from a cabin in Willow Alaska, and I’ve just learned that Alyeska is slowly reopening…I can’t wait to be riding the Anthem in Alaska!

Il pelato abbronzato che vedete alle prese con una tavola e i suoi attacchi, accanto a un bellissimo bambino, sono io. Il nome del bambino è Eren Hughes ed è il frutto dell’amore di Mine e Ted Hughes, sbocciato 14 mesi fa. Già capisce 3 lingue, mi stava dando istruzioni su come si montano gli attacchi (per l’eccitazione li ho montati al contrario!!) e stava già iniziando a capire il mio italiano, il che è tutto dire!

Già, la tavola. Grazie all’aiuto fondamentale di Claudio Cuccu di ROME SNOWBOARD ITALIA, e alla benevolenza di Ryan Runke di ROME SNOWBOARDS ho ricevuto una tavola “Anthem” , un paio di attacchi “Targa” nonchè un paio di scarponi “Bodega” . Ho trovato i pacchi ad aspettarmi nel garage di Ted a Burbank, a pochi passi dai Disney e Warner bros studios, nel Media District di Hollywood. Grazie ragazzi!

Sto postando da una baita di Willow in Alaska, e ho appena appurato che finalmente Alyeska sta aprendo…non vedo l’ora di girare con l’Anthem sulle nevi dell’Alaska!

Prima tappa delle mie esplorazioni con tavola ai piedi, uno dei resorts più famosi della Nuova Zelanda. Lo definiscono come familiare, ma ci sono piste e strutture da far invidia a un qualsiasi resort.

Come dico nel video, la cosa che salta subito agli occhi è la remotezza delle piste. Non è come in Sud Africa, ma per arrivarci da Queenstown, o da Wakaka, ci vuole un’ora buona. Più o meno il tempo che ci si impiega da Torino a Courmayeur. Con la differenza che Queenstown o Wanaka, sono a pochi km da Cardrona. Il problema è la salita per i tornanti, che può rivelarsi impegnativa o disastrosa, come vedrete nei prossimi videos…

C’è un dibattito molto acceso in corso nelle amministrazioni locali. Riguarda la costruzione della cabinovia/funivia che raggiunge la stazione dal fondo valle. E’ argomento di disputa quasi giornaliero sui giornali. Chi la spunterà? Gli ambientalisti o gli uomini d’affari? E’ bene o male sciare su una montagna? Se non è un bene, e già lo si fa, qual è il problema se si costruisce anche una funivia?

First of my snowboarding explorations in one of the most famous resorts in New Zealand. The locals consider it as a family resort, but there are enough slopes and structures to rival with any other.

The most evident feature of this resort, like many others in New Zealand, is the remoteness and the uneasy unsealed road. It’s not like South Africa, but to reach Cardrona from Queenstown or Wanaka, thakes at least one hour. More or less the time it takes to reach Courmayeur from Turin. With the difference that Queenstown or Wanaka are only a few km from Cardrona on a straight line. The problem is, like I said above, the hairpin turns on the way up. When it snows is treacherous and the chains are a must.

There is an ongoing debate on local newspapers, whether or not to build a cable car to the station from the valley floor. Who’s gonna win the battle? Environmentalists or business people? Is it a good or bad thing to ski on a mountain? If it’s bad, then what’s wrong with building a cable car as well?
