Deon, Chris and Jo, the Huysamens, the family that runs the Timour Hall Villa in the quiet suburb of Plumstead, near Cape Town.
I had a wonderful, truly thorough experience in Cape Town, and most of the props are to be paid to them. They’re very nice, friendly, outgoing, open minded, happy, and willing to help at any moment.
Special thanks to Jo, a poet and a brilliant mind, that took a day of her life to give me a free tour of the cape peninsula. Yes, you’re not wrong, a free tour with her own car. Isn’t that great?

Era uno dei miei obbiettivi, dal primo momento che ho aperto la guida sul Sud Africa. Da luglio a novembre questi splendidi e maestosi animali, affollano le coste dell’Eastern Cape, e il posto con la maggior concentrazione di Southern Right, Humpback e Balenottere azzurre e’ il villaggio di Hermanus, da dove ho preso un battello per andare a vederle da vicino.

Se capitate da quelle parti, NON prendete tours organizzati da Cape Town, perche’ arriverete tardi e prenderete il posto peggiore sul battello, che immancabilmente era pieno a meta’ di turisti italiani, armati di ogni genere di ammennicolo dotato di lenti, abbarbicati nelle posizioni migliori…mi sono rifatto in altri posti, in altre coste meno battute. Il mio consiglio e’ di dormire una notte a Hermanus, e andare a prendere il battello appena vi svegliate, cercando di salire per primi. Non e’ facile credetemi, e’ una vera e propria lotta, sembra la corsa a fare le prime tracce nella neve fresca, o a prendere la prima onda in mare.

In ogni caso, alle balene di tutto questo non frega assolutamente nulla e si divertono a saltare fuori dall’acqua, per 5 6 7 volte consecutive, a rotolarsi, ad accoppiarsi, a prendere il sole.

Magnifico vedere onde di 5 metri infrangersi su scogli alti come palazzi, cercate di immedesimarvi, anche se le immagini non rendono come dovrebbero. Pensate all’odore di salsedine, al fragore assordante, agli sbuffi e ai salti dei cetacei….

Il padre di tutti gli sport a scivolamento trasversale su tavola: IL SURF!

Come dico nel video, posto mitico, Jeffreys Bay, Supertubes, spero che Danysurf veda questo post, Selva se lo senti diglielo ok?

Le onde che si arrotolano a 20 metri dagli scogli sono semplicemente perfette, ed infatti si dice che l’onda destra di Supertubes sia la più perfetta al mondo. Un paradiso per chi surfa col sinistro avanti, cioè i regulars.

Nel video surfa anche Plinio França, il ragazzo brasiliano che era nel mio stesso backpackers, che trovate in una sequenza fotografica sul mio blog www.haero.com/blog.

Muta integrale perchè è inverno e l’acqua è a 20°C, ma giuro che se non ci fosse stato vento mi sarei tuffato in shorts. Si stava benissimo in spiaggia.

Godetevi il video e la bellezza dell’Oceano Indiano e le coste del Sud Africa. Magnifico paese, rainbow nation a tutti gli effetti.

The father of all sports based on sideways gliding on boards of all kinds: THE SURF!

The waves at Supertubes, Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, are among the most perfect on this planet. Some say “the” most perfect. Only 20 to 30 meters at any times separate you from the surfers. A guy yelled something on the beach, and I could see all the surfers turn their and look toward us. This to give you an idea of how close you are to the action, in case the images of my video aren’t enough.

In the video I stress that in one day, I descended from the 3000 m above sea level of Tiffindell, to the sea, the Mighty Indian Ocean. This is possible only in South Africa, and a bunch of other nations. Amazing.

Didn’t try surfing this time, I’ll be doing it in Fiji if the ocean is forgiving. Starting at Supertubes, or anywhere else in Jeffreys Bay, is like starting to snowboard on the Himalayas…you don’t do that 🙂

Nel video spiego tutto, ma vale la pena dire che anche questo obbiettivo è stato raggiunto, una tacca in più sul carnet de voyage, un paese in più “scivolato” sulla tavola.

Tiffindell è più remoto di Afri-Ski, ma è più sviluppato e ha piani concreti di sviluppo nel breve periodo. In 2 anni, passa da 1.2 km a 10 km di piste! Scusate se è poco!

Ci sarà una telecabina, altre ancore e seggiovie, tutto sempre innevato artificialmente, a +6°C e con 10% di umidità…questi due dati bastano per farvi capire che razza di posto incredibile che c’è all’ombra del Ben McDhui, la vetta più alta dell’Eastern Cape, 3001 m.

La passione per lo “snow fun” porta chi abita a Durban a sciropparsi 7.5 ore di macchina, chi abita a Cape Town o J’oburg molte di più…chapeau!

The Snow Must Go On.

Tiffindell is at the southern border between South Africa and Lesotho, in the Eastern Cape region, 7.5 hours from Durban, even more from Jo’burg and Cape Town. Despite this, people flock to ride and have fun up there, on the shadow of the Ben McDhui, with its 3001, the highest peak of the Cape. Another one of my targets reached and documented.

The scenery is majestic, and you only realize that you’re going to snowboard, after having reached the 2500m high plateau, above the last steep ridge of the Drakensberg escarpment, when you finally see tiffindell’s bowl, a white oasis in a sea of bronws and yellows.
Sometimes snow covers steadily the whole plateau for weeks.

The Tiffindell village is a self contained little theme park, and the theme is snow fun, as Maartin the manager said. The closest real town is 4 hours away, so they have to be prepared for averything, inlcuding injuries with a medical facility on site. Very remarkable.

The peculiar weather allows them to make artificial snow in a wide range of temperature-humidity combinations, the lowest and most incredible being 6°C and 10% of humidity!
